Galatasaray set five Champions League records in historic 5-2 win over Juventus

History was not just made in Istanbul, it was torn apart and rewritten as Galatasaray handed Juventus a night they will never forget, storming to a staggering 5-2 victory in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off.

The scoreline alone was seismic. The records behind it were historic.

For the first time in Champions League history, Juventus conceded five goals in a single match. Never before had the Italian giants collapsed so heavily on Europe’s biggest stage.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, smashed multiple national and continental barriers in one unforgettable evening:

It was a night where boundaries were erased and reputations shaken.

Osimhen at the heart of history

While Victor Osimhen did not get on the scoresheet, his influence was decisive in shaping a record-breaking outcome. The Nigerian forward registered two assists, stretched Juventus relentlessly, and anchored the attacking structure that overwhelmed the Italian defence.

Osimhen has now provided two assists in consecutive matches for the first time in his career, having also set up two goals in the weekend’s 5-2 win over Eyüpspor; a quiet but telling personal milestone amid the chaos.

Individual records pile up

The records did not stop at the team level.

Noa Lang wrote himself into Galatasaray folklore by becoming the first player in the club’s history to score twice on his Champions League debut.

Midfielder Gabriel Sara joined elite company by both scoring and assisting in a Champions League knockout match, something only Wesley Sneijder had previously achieved for the club.

By the final whistle, Galatasaray had also posted their highest expected goals figure ever recorded against Juventus, created the most big chances any team has managed against the Italians this season, and spent more time in Juventus’ penalty area than any of their opponents in the competition.

How the records were broken

The match itself mirrored the chaos of the history books.

Galatasaray struck first through Gabriel Sara after a defensive error, but Teun Koopmeiners turned the game on its head with two goals to give Juventus a 2-1 halftime lead.

Then came a second-half collapse that will echo through Turin.

Lang equalised immediately after the restart. Davinson Sánchez powered home a header to make it 3-2. Juventus’ night worsened when Juan Cabal was sent off, opening the floodgates.

Osimhen assisted Lang for the fourth; sealing another record, before teeing up Sacha Boey to complete the most damaging Champions League defeat Juventus have ever suffered.

What it means

Galatasaray now travel to Italy with history already secured and qualification firmly within reach. One disciplined performance in the return leg could send them into the last 16 and cement this tie as one of the most extraordinary in the club’s European legacy.

For Juventus, the task is daunting. For Galatasaray, the message is unmistakable:
records were broken, barriers were shattered, and European history was rewritten in Istanbul.

Other games

In the other Champions League match of the night, Vinícius Júnior scored before alleging he was racially abused, an incident later confirmed by teammate Kylian Mbappé, as Real Madrid secured a 1–0 away victory over SL Benfica in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain came from two goals down to defeat AS Monaco 3–2. Nigerian-American forward Folarin Balogun scored twice for Monaco, but his brace was cancelled out by a double from Désiré Doué and a goal from reigning African Footballer of the Year Achraf Hakimi.

In Germany, Borussia Dortmund seized the upper hand in their tie against Atalanta with a 2-0 first-leg victory, as Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier both converted to give the Bundesliga giants home comforts ahead of the second leg.
