Onuachu, Nwaiwu dominate in Turkey as Moffi nets first Porto goal

Paul Onuachu’s campaign in Turkey has evolved into more than a scoring run, it is a season-long assertion of authority.

On Friday night, the Super Eagles striker once again imposed himself on the Süper Lig, towering above the noise and pressure to inspire Trabzonspor to a 3–1 victory over Fatih Karagümrük, and further cement his status as one of the league’s most decisive figures.

The moment that set the tone arrived in the 20th minute. Onuachu rose imperiously inside the box and powered home a trademark header, his 18th league goal of the season.

More tellingly, it was already his seventh headed goal of the campaign. According to figures from Opta, that single-player aerial output now matches the combined headed-goal tallies of Istanbul heavyweights Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş; a staggering statistic that underlines just how dominant Onuachu has been in the air.

Karagümrük briefly clawed their way back into the contest when Daniele Verde struck an equaliser in the 28th minute, but the balance of the game tilted decisively after the interval. Trabzonspor’s growing mastery of set pieces began to tell, exposing Karagümrük’s inability to deal with repeated deliveries into dangerous areas.

In a subplot that added historical weight to the night, another Nigerian emerged as the unlikely difference-maker.

Centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu delivered a second-half brace both goals coming from corners, to put the contest beyond doubt.

The goals took his season tally to three and placed him in elite company: Nwaiwu became the first Trabzonspor defender to score twice in a single Süper Lig match since Carl Medjani achieved the feat in November 2014, coincidentally against Galatasaray.

The result was a statement on multiple levels. For Trabzonspor, it reinforced their threat from dead-ball situations. For Onuachu, it was another reminder of his dual value; not just as a prolific scorer, but as a constant aerial reference point around which games are shaped.

While Onuachu continues to dominate in Turkey, a quieter but equally significant story was unfolding thousands of kilometres away in Portugal.

Terem Moffi took his first decisive step toward revival, scoring his maiden goal for FC Porto in a 3–1 win over FC Arouca at the imposing Estádio do Dragão.

Introduced late in the match, the Super Eagles forward showed calm and clarity under pressure, finishing confidently in the 95th minute after being teed up by William Gomes. It was the type of instinctive finish that suggested a striker shaking off rust and rediscovering belief.

Earlier, Porto had gone in front through Oskar Pietuszewski before Arouca responded via Nais Djouahra. Gomes then restored Porto’s advantage from the penalty spot, opening the door for Moffi to add gloss, and personal significance, to the scoreline.

The goal carried extra meaning given Moffi’s recent journey. After a difficult spell prior to his January loan switch from OGC Nice, the Nigerian has been carefully reintegrated, managing just 60 minutes across appearances against CD Nacional, Rio Ave and Arouca. Replacing Deniz Gül late on, Moffi’s movement, patience and composure hinted at a forward steadily reconnecting with his edge.

For Nigeria, the contrast is compelling. In Turkey, Onuachu is operating at full force, dominating defenders, shaping outcomes and building a season that speaks loudly of legacy.

In Portugal, Moffi is only just reopening his chapter, but the signs are promising. Different stages, different struggles; yet both stories point toward Super Eagles forwards rediscovering form, confidence and momentum when it matters most.
