British actress Charithra Surya Chandran has reacted to the backlash she received for being cast in the live action of Japanese manga series, One Piece.
The actress, who also starred in season two of Bridgerton, explained that the backlash directed at her was not because she was unfamiliar with the One Piece universe but because of the colour of her skin.
Charithra revealed that she was criticised for accepting the role, adding that fans keep complaining that she is not the right person for the role. She noted that she is unfazed by the harsh words thrown at her, stating that she will not be the first nor the last to be racially judged.
“I couldn’t believe how I had not interacted with One Piece prior to this, because it is huge. And now I am in the universe, I see it absolutely everywhere. Thank you so much for all your support. I think as a woman of colour in this industry, it is unfortunately something that is somewhat the status quo. It is absolutely not acceptable but I’m not the first person in this position, I will not be the last,” she stated.
